The 4TH Southern Africa Quality Assurance Network (SAQAN) Conference on“Quality Assurance in Higher Education” kicked off on Monday 8th October 2018.

The theme behind the 4th session was Quality Assurance in Higher Education: Theories, Perspectives and Practices Geared towards Attainment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Southern African Region and beyond.

Hosting this, special assembly of Southern Africa’s best minds on Higher education providers and standards controllers was the Council on Higher Education (CHE) Lesotho. QualityAssurance bodies and institutionsfrom the 10 member countries of SAQAN were represented by over 150 delegates who converged in Maseru.

Introduction remarkswere made by CHE Lesotho’s Chief Executive Mrs M.T Motseko. She expressed the high expectation that has been generated for the conference owing to the expected inputs from Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Harmonization of African Higher Education Quality Assurance (HAQAA),Government Academic Exchange Services (DAAD), and other presenters.

Supportby sponsors was acknowledged, and contribution by co-hosting partners, CHE Lesotho council members, CHE Lesotho staff and theSAQAN Executive Committee was highly appreciated. The line-up of key speakers alsoincluded the Chairperson of Council - CHE Lesotho Mr MatjatoMoteane, the Interim President of SAQAN Professor NarendBaijnathand the Honorable Minister of Education and Training, Professor NtoiRapapa.

The plenary sessions included presentations from academics and experts from the SADC sub-region and beyond around topics that included contributions of Higher Education to National Development, its financing and implications for Quality Assurance; The potential of Skills Development and Recognition for Regulated Labour Mobility in SADC to mention a few. The discussions in the plenary sessions were engaging and presented opportunity for sharing best practices in Higher Education qualifications standardization not only at national levels but also at regional level.
